Dermaplaning is a treatment that exfoliates the skin and removes villus hair, or peach fuzz and dirt. This differs from dermabrasion. Dermabrasion is done with a high-speed rotating brush that exfoliates the skin. Dermaplaning uses a scalpel-type tool called a dermatome. The aesthetician or doctor moves the dermatome back and forth and scrapes off the top layer of dead skin.

Is dermaplaning good for your face?

Dermaplaning removes fine hair and exfoliates the face, leaving the skin smoother and brighter. The treatment can also soften fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tone, and reduce hyperpigmentation. It can also work to reduce the look of acne scars. The results from this treatment will depend on your skin type and medical history.

Dermaplaning is a safe procedure for most people. When this is done by a certified dermatologist, there is little risk of side effects. When the treatment is completed, there is no downtime required.

Does hair grow back thicker after dermaplaning?

The answer to this question is no. It is a myth that your facial hair will grow back darker and/or thicker after dermaplaning. It is not possible for hair to do this. The hair will grow back, but it will keep its original color and thickness.

The only time hair changes color or thickness is as a result of hormonal changes or hormonal imbalance. Some women will experience this with menopause. Whether you shave or have dermaplaning done your facial hair should come back exactly as it was before the treatment.

What should you not do after dermaplaning?

After your dermaplaning treatment, there are a few things you should not do. Your skin will be a little sensitive and vulnerable when you have finished. This sensitivity will be present for 3 days to a week. After the treatment, don’t do the following:

• Don’t go tanning, whether on the beach or tanning bed
• Avoid extreme heat for at least 3 days
• Don’t use exfoliators or scrubs for 1 week
• Stay away from chlorine for 1 week.
• Don’t forget the moisturizers and serums
• Don’t forget the sunscreen

There may be other recommendations for you to follow once the treatment is completed and your specialist will talk with you about those when you are finished.

Is dermaplaning worth the money?

Dermaplaning is worth the money. A difference in your skin tone and texture will be evident right away. After the treatment, you can put on makeup almost immediately and the application will be smoother. Skincare products will work more effectively and you will see better results as they penetrate the skin more easily.

The effects of each treatment last up to four weeks. Repeating treatments will increase some of the benefits.

Who should consider dermaplaning?

You may want to consider dermaplaning if you have the following skin concerns:

• Acne scarring
• Actinic keratosis (scaly patches that may lead to skin cancer)
• Dry or dull skin
• Skin damage from sun exposure
• Peach fuzz (soft, light hair on your face)
• Fine lines or wrinkles

Who should not get dermaplaning?

Some skin concerns can be negatively affected by dermaplaning. Before you get this aesthetic treatment talk to your healthcare provider or dermaplaning specialist. If you have the following it is not recommended that you get a dermaplaning treatment:

• Cold sore outbreaks
• An active case of acne
• Moles, freckles, skin tags, or other growths
• Eczema
• Skin burns from radiation therapy or other treatments
• Psoriasis
• Skin rashes (contact dermatitis)
